“We are in this for the long game” - Cyra Nargolwalla on why Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) remain critical for the IP profession
On 4 November 2025 in London, intellectual property professionals gathered to mark IP Inclusive’s 10th anniversary and underscore that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) remain key strategic priorities for the sector’s future.
In its latest newsletter, AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) reflects on one of the sessions from the event. The article, authored by Maria Cecilia Romoleroux and Cyra Nargolwalla (Board member of Plasseraud IP), members of AIPPI’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, reflects on a key discussion at a time when Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives are facing increasing political and cultural headwinds.
Hosted by Gwilym Roberts of Kilburn & Strode, the session brought together leading voices from across the IP community, including Daniel Winterfeldt MBE KC (Hon), Managing Director & General Counsel for EMEA, and Jefferies, Founder & Chair of the InterLaw Diversity Forum, as keynote speaker.
A central takeaway from the discussion was the need to move beyond “one-size-fits-all” approaches to EDI and towards data-driven accountability, with a particular focus on both access to the profession and long-term retention of diverse talent. The panel also highlighted social mobility as a unifying priority capable of strengthening the profession as a whole.
Despite the challenges facing EDI today, the tone of the discussion remained forward-looking. The message is clear: sustained commitment, collaboration across jurisdictions, and strong professional communities such as AIPPI and IP Inclusive are essential to ensure the IP profession remains accessible, inclusive and sustainable for future generations.
