EUIPO Clarifies Technical Requirements for the Representation of EU Designs as of July 2026
Finally, the EUIPO clarifies the technical requirements regarding the representation of European Designs which will be accessible from July 1st, 2026.
This is especially important and interesting since the “Design Package” reform introduces new forms of designs consisting in animations or 3D files. The maximum of seven views per EU design becomes a thing of the past on that occasion (well, at least there is some improvement).
Article 8 of Decision EX-26-03 of the Executive Director of the Office of 8 June 2026 on communication by electronic means exposes the requirements for the representation of designs.
Our guess on new file formats was correct: MP4 will be accepted for animations while OBJ and STL will be acceptable formats for 3D files of “dynamic” designs.
File size limitations are as follows:
- 2 MB for JPEG;
- 20 MB for OBJ, STL and MP4
- maximum total size of attachments for one design: 20 MB
- maximum total size of one application: 1 GB;
The formats of the electronic file and other limitations are as follows:
- static views: a maximum of 10 views in JPEG format, no smaller than 800 × 800 pixels
- 3D view: in either OBJ or STL file formats.
- Animation: MP4 file format (with some codec, frame rate, bit rate ad minimum resolution requirements)
Additional indications can also be found in the Common Communication For Requirements And Means Of Design Representation, that recently emerged.
